about

Laura Leppert is an artist, filmmaker and researcher working with video, installation, text and sound.
In her works, she focuses on experimental video with fictional and documentary elements rooted in emblematic places,
anthropogenic landscapes and material cultures.
Combining research and fictioning strategies, she weaves surreal, non-linear world-containers that act as windows into
logics of thinking and feeling derived from our lived realities. She often works in longer cycles or cross-media complexes.
She is in search of environments, landscapes, documents or objects that carry a particular intensity - that emerge from
a syzygy of historical facts, paradigms of thought and material realities. These hyperobjects she tries to break open
and trace their agencies and testimonies through contemporary crises into speculative futures.
Recently, she has been working with DNA in laboratories, with AI and ergot mushrooms in Alsace, with open-pit
mines in the Ruhr area, botanical gardens, or with the haunting of tourist hotspots in climate fiction.
Often, sites show up in her works that she deems emblematic for these processes, and which she attempts to
weird from within - laboratories, collections, spaces of knowledge production or extractive architectures.
She is working towards a recognition of the non-computable, non-automatable, non-quantifiable, and favors emergent,
weird, aphasic or unreadable states as poetic hinges of her works.

Her works have been shown at Haus der Kunst, Munich (DE); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (DE); Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven,
Wilhelmshaven (DE); Maximiliansforum, Munich (DE); Eigen+Art Lab, Berlin (DE); Künstler*innenhaus Dortmund, Dortmund (DE);
Galerie im Saalbau, Berlin (DE); European Media Art Festival, Osnabrück (DE); WRO Art Center, Wrocław (PL); Les Instants Video,
Milan/Marseille (IT/FR); Künstler*innenhaus Bregenz (A); CICA Museum, Gimpo (KR); MACA Museo de Arte Contemporanea, Alicante (ES);
Šopa Gallery, Košice (SK), Centro Cultural San Martin (AR), among others.
She has received numerous grants by varying funding bodies, a. o. by Stiftung Kunstfonds, Bayrisches Ministerium für Kunst und Wissenschaft,
Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, Kunststiftung NRW, maecenia foundation for female* artists, Stiftung Stark. Among her awards are a
Postgraduate Scholarship by Muthesius Kunsthochschule, a Scholarship for Visual Arts of the City of Munich & a Prize for her diploma work.
